[Guide to Jane Austen's World] Order of Precedence

이전에 이미 계급 순위에 대해 간단하게 다루긴 했지만, 자료를 찾아보다 저장해둔 당시 계급 순위표를 발견해서 따로 글을 작성한다. 소위 Regency Era(Period)라고 불리는 19세기 영국에는 이러한 순위가 있었구나, 정도로 참고하면 좋을 듯 하다. 출처는 하단에 밝혀둔다.

작위의 경우 그것이 유지된 기간을 중요하게 보는데, 같은 작위인 경우 유서가 깊은(만들어진지 더 오래된) 쪽이 우선권을 지닙니다.
공작위의 경우 잉글랜드 -> 스코틀랜드 -> 대영제국(Great Britain) -> 아일랜드 -> 연합왕국(United Kingdom) 순서.

여성들의 순위는, 결혼 전에는 가문의 위치에 따라 결정된다. 부르는 명칭은, 특히 결혼 뒤에는 다양해지므로 유의.

이들을 부르는 호칭은 대부분 작위에 근거한다. 공작위 이하 여러 작위를 가지고 있을 경우 공작위부터 설명을 시작하고, 여러 공작위가 있을 경우 작위의 생성 시기를 우선으로 한다. 당시에 당신이 떨어진다면(?) 즉각 써먹을 수 있는 단순한 것들은 다음과 같다(회화 중의 호칭):
- Your Majesty. 이는 국왕이나 여왕에게.
- Your Royal Highness. 군주의 배우자, 자녀 그리고 형제자매들에게.
- Your Highness. 군주의 조카, 친척, 사촌들에게.
- Duke or Duchess. 공작이나 공작부인에게.
- Your Grace. 영국 성공회 대주교에게.
- My Lord. 공작 밑의 작위(후작, 백작, 자작, 남작) 및 성공회 주교에게.
- Lord.  범위가 아주 넓다. 후작, 백작 그리고 자작에게 사용한다. 후작이나 자작의 경우 영지명을 붙여서 'Marquis of Exeter'또는 'Earl of Leigh' 이런 식으로 소개되기도 하지만 일상 대화에서는 이렇게 하지 않고 그냥 Lord 를 써서 Lord Exeter / Lord Leigh 라고 불렀다.
- Lady. 잘 알겠지만 숙녀들에게. 후작부인, 백작부인, 자작부인 그리고 남작부인에게 사용했다. 위의 경우와 마찬가지로 'Marchioness of Exeter'가 'Lady Exeter'는 식으로.
이 단어는 준남작과 기사의 부인에게도 사용했다. 기사인 Leigh 경의 부인은 'Lady Leigh'로 호칭해야 한다.
- Sir. 이것도 다들 익숙할 것 같다. '경'으로 해석되는 호칭으로, 준남작이나 기사들이 사용하는 호칭이었다. 예를 들어 'Sir James Leigh'.

만일 편지나 글을 써야 할 때 귀족 들을 지칭해야 한다면 다음을 활용하자:
- the Most Reverend. 대주교
- His Grace. 공작 또는 대주교
- the Most Noble. 후작
- the Right Honourable. 백작, 자작 그리고 남작
- the Right Reverend. 주교
- the Right Honourable. 추밀원(the Privy Council) 일원 그리고 전임자들.
- the Venerable. (영국 성공회의) 부주교
- the Very Reverend. 지역 주임 사제
- the Reverend. 이상에 포함되지 않는 영국 성공회의 일원들(서기라던가)
- the Honourable. 의원들

마지막으로, 귀족의 자녀들을 어떻게 지칭하는지 알아보자. 꽤 복잡하면서도 단순하다.
- Lord. 공작, 후작, 백작의 장자를 지칭할 때 사용한다. 아버지의 두번째 작위를 사용할 수도 있는데, 만약 부친이 Hennings 공작위 + Exeter 후작위 + Leigh 백작위를 가지고 있으면 장자는 Exeter 후작으로 자신을 소개하는 것이 가능하다. 어차피 물려받을 거니까.
공작과 후작의 차남의 경우에도 Lord 호칭을 쓰는 것이 가능했는데, 이들은 후계자(Heir)는 아니었어도 'Lord + 세례명 + 가문명'이런 식으로 소개될 수 있었다. 차남 이하는 부친이 가진 작위를 '빌려'오는 것이 불가능했다.
- Lady. 공작, 후작, 백작의 딸들이 세례명과 가문명을 붙여서 사용했다. 어차피 작위는 물려받지 못했기 때문에 차남과 같은 방식을 사용한 것이다.
- the Honourable. 자작과 남작의 자녀들, 백작의 차남(이하 포함)에게 사용했다. 예를 들어 the Honourable Leigh 이런 식으로.

이게 꽤 복잡해 보이는데...그냥 작위 순서를 지키고, Lord / Lady 만 성 앞에 적당히 붙이면 구색 정도는 맞출 수 있다는 소리다. 물론 직책을 가지고 있거나, 여러 작위를 가지고 있는 경우에는 더 복잡해지지만 그 이상으로 난해한 책을 딱히 한국에 출간된 소설에서 본 적이 없으므로(...). 게다가 신사들을 다룬 문제에서는 대부분 오등작까지는 올라오지도 못한다.

그러니까 군주 - 귀족 /////// 신사 이렇게 생각해도 좋을 정도로 사회적 계급(지위) 차이가 엄청났다는 이야기다. 높은 사람이라 해봤자 준남작, 시장, 혹은 기사 정도.

그러니까 제인 오스틴의 소설이나 브론테 자매의 책을 주로 읽을 작정이라면 그냥 저정도만 알아둬도 충분하다. 물론 저 시기에 당신이 시간여행을 떠난다면 다른 이야기지만, 친절한 가정교사를 만날 수 있기를 기도하자.
이쯤 되어서 읽기를 추천하는 책은 단연 섀커리의 <허영의 시장(the Vanity Fair)>. 여자 등장인물 중 하나가 아주 속을 후벼파는데다 가볍게 읽을 분량은 절대 아니지만 이런거 확인하면서 읽기에는 꽤 재미있다. 그 당시 계급이나 지위에 따른 행동 방식이라던가, 귀족들의 삶에 대해서 조금은 들여다 볼 수도 있어서 내가 참고하는 책에도 예시로 꽤 많이 나오는 편이다.
